Frequently asked questions about materials, techniques, colorings, etc.

Q. Can I create any image, any size?

A. As you can see in the “Icons of San Diego,” any image can be made using the LithoMosaic process - from breaking waves to the ornate architecture of Balboa Park. With LithoMosaic, mosaics can be conceived of and installed at a huge scale never before possible in the realm of landscape architecture.

Q. What is the advantage of LithoMosaic over standard mosaics?

A. The LithoMosaic technique has many advantages over more traditional methods of creating mosaics. LithoMosaic has the structural durability of concrete, and its unique methodology allows for the artwork to be assembled offsite and approved by both the owner and the artist before installation. The installation can be performed in a matter of days, saving time on construction scheduling and cost. LithoMosaics can also be utilized in very cold environments, unlike traditional mosaics.

Q. What are the advantages of using Lithocrete® over ordinary concrete?

A. Lithocrete has many advantages as a medium for innovative decorative concrete. It is usually poured all in one process so installation time is about half that of ordinary concrete. It is more structurally sound and more coefficient than ordinary concrete; thus it is less apt to slip, an important safety factor.

Lithocrete needs no grouting or caulking, and it does not require the periodic application of topical sealers or enhancing finishes as classic concrete does. The Lithocrete process incorporates a sealer that penetrates continuously and hardens and ensures a safe, non-slip durable surface. Being low maintenance, it is environmentally friendly and cost-efficient over the long term.

Moreover, the Lithocrete design process uses many recycled materials. It’s safer, more environmentally sound, cost effective – and above all, the Lithocrete process is opening doors to new levels of artistry, innovation, quality and craftsmanship.
